Nominations are Open for Society Awards

 

The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society invites nominations for the 2023 EMBS Society Awards. These well-established awards recognize outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of Biomedical Engineering including:  Academic Career Achievement Award, Professional Career Achievement Award, Early Career Achievement Award, Distinguished Service Award, Technical Achievement Awards and The William J. Morlock Award. The IEEE EMBS Award for Excellence in Biomedical Technology. The nomination deadline is 3 April 2023. Award Recipients will be announced in May and the awards will be presented at EMBC23.

Call for Nominations Best Chapter Awards

 

The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society is currently accepting nominations for the 2023 EMBS Regional Chapter Awards. The purpose of these awards is to is promote geographic diversity within the Society and to provide recognition to chapters. New this year, as many 12 chapters awards may receive the 2023 Best Chapter Award. A Best EMBS Chapter and Best EMBS Student Chapter/Club will be chosen for each of the five EMBS regions. An overall Best Chapter and an overall Best Student Chapter/Club will be selected from amongst these regional winners! This new format will provide an opportunity for more chapter recognition and engagement than ever before.

EMBS Past Presidents Receives Doctor Honoris Causa

 

Metin Akay, EMBS Past President and Chief Ambassador is honored to have received a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Pécs, Hungary in recognition of his contributions and impact on the field of biomedical engineering. This recognition from the Medical School and College of Engineering and Information Technology highlights the high regard in which he is held by the medical and engineering communities, and the esteem in which his work is held. Dr. Akay will hold his inaugural address in Pécs on 9 March, 2023.

Funding Available for Chapters, Student Branches & Clubs

 

EMBS has increased the amount of funding available for Chapters, Student Branches and clubs. We offer up to US$2000 for virtual events and US$3000 for physical events, on an application basis. The matching ratio is 2:1, with EMBS providing up to twice the amount raised from some other source to offset the cost of activities such as regional meetings, seasonal schools, career fairs, industry tours, and community engagement events. Preference given for activities that promote innovation, diversity, sustainability, and collaboration with local communities.

EMBS Gets New Brand Identity

 

The new wordmark for EMBS better represents our nearly 11,000 members from across more than 100 countries who are engineering the future of medicine. Our new icon symbolizes both #medicine and #biology and how they are interconnected/intertwined. Notable, like the double helix, the new icon brings multiple technologies together. The abstract arrow in the purple color further exemplifies forward thinking and pushing the boundaries of discovery and innovation.

Of Interest: a2 Collective Symposium

 

Our friends at the a2 Collective are offering a full day symposium on leveraging AI and technology to improve care and health outcomes for older adults, including persons with AD/ADRD, and their caregivers. It will feature leading experts on aging, AI ethics, and commercialization; opportunities to meet with leadership from JH AITC, MassAITC, and PennAITech as well as National Institute on Aging representatives and industry partners; and an introduction to the first cohort of projects selected for a2 Pilot Awards.

The IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Body Sensor Networks – Sensor and Systems for Digital Health (BSN 2023) is currently accepting submissions. The conference addresses digital health research and offer participants a unique forum to discuss the key issues and innovative solutions for sensor and systems development, data analytics and modeling, data management and interpretation, and communications.

Now is the time to take advantage of the appreciably discounted registration rates for EMBC23. EMBS members can take advantage of a low US$625 early bird rate while EMBS students rates as low as US$400. Many ancilliary events such as Lunch with Leaders, Women in Engineering and the Welcome Reception are complimentary with registration and are on a first come first served basis so don't wait to register. The conference is currently accepting One-Page Research Paper Submission (Deadline by 15 April).  And by popular demand the poster session is returning to the physical poster format.

ISBI Conference on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI)

 

There is still time for to get the early bird registration rate for the 20th IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging. ISBI 2023, organized jointly by the IEEE Signal Processing Society and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, is being held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, 18-21 April, 2023.
