In Memoriam: Blake Alan Lloyd
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Blake Alan Lloyd, who passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at the age of 66, surrounded by his family.
Blake served as President of the IEEE Industry Applications Society 2013-2014. During his tenure as Society President, two IAS Technical Committees focused on Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conversion Systems and Transportation Systems were formed. These technical committees remain active today. Blake's full In Memoriam will be posted in the Jan/Feb issue of the IEEE Industry Applications Magazine.
Blake is fondly remembered for his warmth, generosity, and dedication to those he cared about. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Blake’s family and friends during this difficult time.

IAS Webinar: Overview of the Continental European Electricity System: Towards a Sustainable Power Grid
12 November @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm - ET (US & Canada)
[ Image ] [[https://ieee.webex.com/weblink/register/r79fb692b51cb7c583ff922436b3146be?IAS Newsletter October, 2025]]
Abstract: The Continental European electricity system extends over thousands of kilometers, covering large areas of territory, including countries ranging from Portugal to Turkey. In the last five years, the system has expanded even further with the incorporation of countries such as Ukraine and Moldova, and more recently integrating also the Baltic states: Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Although, from a technical perspective, it is expected that the larger the system, the more robust it will be.

[ Image ] [[https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/mostRecentIssue.jsp?IAS Newsletter October, 2025&punumber=2943]]
The IEEE IAS Board has approved the addition of a NEW Digital Edition of IEEE Industry Applications Magazine. Beginning with this issue of the monthly IAS e-Newsletter, the Magazine Digital Edition will be available from a link at the end of every e-Newsletter issue. IAS members previously had access via a “Get Entire Issue Now” link from IEEE Xplore, but this was just a static flat PDF. The NEW Digital Edition includes navigation to selected articles from a Table of Contents Sidebar, a page turning feature, Zoom and download of individual articles, email authentication, access to back issues from the Home page and much more. We hope you test-drive the new Magazine Digital Edition.

Call for Papers: IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics Special Issue on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems
Special Issue on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems
[ Image ] [[https://www.ieee-pels.org/publications/open-calls-for-papers/?IAS Newsletter October, 2025#JournalofEmerging]]
Power electronics technology is essential for distributed generation systems and the transition to a decarbonized electric energy infrastructure. However, the integration of renewable energy, storage systems, and new loads like electric vehicles and AI data centers brings challenges in power conversion, grid stability, and energy management. These challenges require power electronic technology to be more efficient, reliable, intelligent, and cost-effective. Furthermore, the shift to distributed generation calls for innovative power electronic solutions to interface renewable energy, support bidirectional power flow, and maintain stability. Thus, this special issue seeks research on advanced power electronics that enable efficient, reliable, and sustainable distributed generation, aiming to accelerate next-generation electric energy systems.
