I&CPS Tech Conference Featured Standards Refinement, First-Ever Green Computing Workshop
IAS held its 61st annual Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (I&CPS) technical conference in Montreal, Canada, in May. I&CPS is a forum for both experienced and younger engineers to share ideas, present findings from papers, and develop or update one of the most comprehensive series of IEEE standards.
During I&CPS, Standard Series 3000 working groups held numerous panels, presentations, and comment discussion sessions that addressed the review and publication efforts of the set.
A highlight was the debut of the Green Computing workshop, held on the first day of I&CPS. It featured expert speakers who are creating and maintaining data centers with significant environmentally friendly energy elements. This workshop was created for professionals involved in the design and operations of data centers that will have partial or significant green energy components. Speakers also focused on current approaches and standards, as well as future methodologies that will be guiding the green data centers of tomorrow.

The IEEE IAS Board has approved the addition of a NEW Digital Edition of IEEE Industry Applications Magazine. Beginning with this issue of the monthly IAS e-Newsletter, the Magazine Digital Edition will be available from a link at the end of every e-Newsletter issue. IAS members previously had access via a “Get Entire Issue Now” link from IEEE Xplore, but this was just a static flat PDF. The NEW Digital Edition includes navigation to selected articles from a Table of Contents Sidebar, a page turning feature, Zoom and download of individual articles, email authentication, access to back issues from the Home page and much more. We hope you test-drive the new Magazine Digital Edition.

Integrated machine drives (IMDs), which combine the machine, power converter, and control system into a single unit, offer significant advantages in terms of efficiency, compactness, and ease of use. By eliminating the need for external control equipment, IMDs provide highly efficient and seamless solutions for a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Their integrated design reduces the mass and volume required for the converter and controller housing and removes the need for lengthy machine-converter connections, resulting in cost savings of 20% to 40%.

Special Issue on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems
[ Image ] [[https://www.ieee-pels.org/publications/open-calls-for-papers/?IAS Newsletter September, 2025#JournalofEmerging]]
Power electronics technology is essential for distributed generation systems and the transition to a decarbonized electric energy infrastructure. However, the integration of renewable energy, storage systems, and new loads like electric vehicles and AI data centers brings challenges in power conversion, grid stability, and energy management. These challenges require power electronic technology to be more efficient, reliable, intelligent, and cost-effective. Furthermore, the shift to distributed generation calls for innovative power electronic solutions to interface renewable energy, support bidirectional power flow, and maintain stability. Thus, this special issue seeks research on advanced power electronics that enable efficient, reliable, and sustainable distributed generation, aiming to accelerate next-generation electric energy systems.
