Join us on Wednesday, 02 October at 11:00 AM ET (-4 UTC) for a live webinar led by Professor Zhaohao Ding of North China Electric Power University, Beijing, China.
The explosive growth of the digital economy and artificial intelligence has significantly increased data center energy consumption. Thus, leveraging DC's energy consumption flexibility becomes a crucial challenge to enhance DC’s energy efficiency and reduce its carbon emissions. This talk explores the energy-aware operation of DC towards a low-carbon future. The spatial-temporal flexibility of computing jobs is investigated and potential applications to enhance the sustainable operation of DC and environmental-friendly operation of power systems are discussed. Some pilot experiments and projects using such kinds of technology will also be illustrated. The major engineering and political barriers to implement such type of technology will be discussed.

[ Image ] [[https://convegni.aeit.it/aeit2024/documenti/AEIT2024-Save-the-date.pdf?IAS Newsletter August]]
The IAS Meetings Department has launched a special Program devoted to a group of selected sponsored conferences, to further strengthen their special link with the Society. The Program goal is to enhance the level and quality of involvement of both parties (IAS and the sponsored conference).
On one hand, the selected conferences will have more visibility through all IAS means of communications and will be allowed to use a special logo in addition to the standard IAS logo (see image below); on the other hand, they are required to promote IAS scope and mission with additional actions with respect to the standard ones. IAS will provide dedicated source material (slides, image files, etc.) and also a financial contribution to cover the costs related to this promotional material (e.g. printing costs).
The first conference having the privilege to be selected for the Program is the AEIT2024 International Conference (Trento, Italy, 25-27 September 2024.

IEEE Annual Elections: Your Vote Makes a Difference
One of the popular phrases in U.S. politics this time of year is “elections have consequences.” Indeed, it is true. The process of citizens of any democratic country electing their leaders can and often does have a profound impact on the direction and future for its citizens. It is no different for members of the IEEE.
IEEE elections are democratic, our next generation of volunteer leaders are elected by IEEE members. This means YOU! IEEE Annual Elections opened on 15 August 2024 and will end at 12:00 pm U.S. Eastern Time on 1 October 2024. Ballots were sent electronically to all voting members of record as of 30 June. Those who hold a membership grade of Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, Fellow, Life Fellow, or Honorary Member have already received a ballot and can access this electronically. For these IAS members, the following positions are on the ballot and awaiting your vote:
· IEEE President Elect
· Technical Activities Vice President-Elect
· IEEE USA President Elect (for those who reside in Regions 1-6)
· IEEE Region Director 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 (for those who reside in the Region)
· IEEE Standards Association Board of Governors Member-at-Large, 2025-2026 (for those who are IEEE SA members)
Last year’s annual IEEE election had a ballot return of only 17%. Although our IEEE Program Manager for Elections was encouraged since this was higher than the historic participation of 14-15%, to be truthful both numbers are abysmal. If you have not yet cast your vote in the IEEE Annual Election, please log-in with your IEEE credentials at the Annual Election website and vote today.

Data Center Subcommittee Grows Leadership Role
The IAS Data Center Subcommittee has been increasing its thought leadership influence in the rapidly evolving world of data center development and standards. Its members' work is shaping the future of data center infrastructure, which is increasingly significant due to the vast amounts of power AI requires of servers in this high-growth field.
The Data Center Subcommittee has several speakers presenting about these standards at the 7x24 Exchange International Fall Conference in Phoenix in October. Subcommittee Secretary Bill Schaumann of Burns & McDonnell, and Subcommittee Member Dr. Qais Alsfasfeh of Schneider Electric, will explore emerging technologies to support mission-critical infrastructures in their panel, “Understanding the Latest and Greatest Data Center Construction Codes and Standards.”
Industry professionals are warmly welcomed to join the Data Center Subcommittee, where they’ll help set standards that affect the entire industry. Contact Chair Daleep Mohla at [email protected] or Vice Chair Keith Waters at [email protected] to join.

Call for Proposals: 2025 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Prevention Through Design Student Engineering Education Initiative
[ Image ] [[https://electricalsafetyworkshop.org/?IAS Newsletter August]]
The IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Committee is pleased to announce the call for submissions for the 2025 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Prevention Through Design Student Engineering Education Initiative.
A limited number of students will be selected for this honor to participate in the 2025 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW) which will be held in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 3-7, 2025.
The application deadline is 15 October 2024. Submission details and application requirements can be found on the ESW website at:
For additional information, contact the program chair, Prof. Payman Dehghanian, at [email protected].
The Prevention Through Design Student Engineering Education Initiative is geared toward graduate students in electrical and safety engineering. The goal of this program is to engage talented and promising students who show an interest in advancing engineering technology solutions that reduce the risk of electrical injuries. Students whose submissions are accepted receive a subsidy for travel, lodging, and registration for participation in the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop.
Participation in this program is three-fold:
A student submits a proposal essay for review consideration.
The selected students are awarded attendance at the upcoming ESW, during which they present their proposal in the form of a poster.
The students present to their fellow university classmates and professors what they learned from their participation in the technical programs, tutorials, exposition, and networking opportunities at the ESW. The specific details are to be determined through collaboration between the student and his or her professor and outlined in the application submission. For example, one might consider hosting a department-wide presentation or brown-bag series about the ESW.
