The first IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Generative Artificial Intelligence Hackathon Challenge 2024 was successfully conducted from January to August 2024. Nine finalist papers will be presented at the 50th IECON in November 2024. Congratulations to the winners!

This IES and IEEE Smart Village project aimed to design, develop, and implement a hand-made solar drying fruit equipment, and a solar-powered water drip irrigation system in a permaculture farm in Poptun, Petén, located in the northeast of Guatemala.

STEM education outreach program, aimed to enhance student’s knowledge and skills in essential areas of STEM, was successfully conducted on 27 August 2024 at NSS School Akathethara in Kerala, India, by IEEE IES SBC NSSCE.

In the quest for outreach to IES regional Chapters through the Growth Centre initiative, an IES Chapter Leaders Workshop was conducted on 13 September 2024, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Ten IES Chapters were represented: Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bombay, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata – Guwahati, Kolkata – Silchar, Kolkata – Pradesh. 

Recognizing the momentous technical and societal trends occurring in transportation electrification, the IEEE recently approved the formation of a Technical Council focused on the subject, to be called the Transportation Electrification Council (TEC). The Industrial Electronics Society is a sponsor of TEC and you can join for free!

ONCON 2024 will take place virtually 8-10 December 2024. ONCON 2024 has focuses on theory and applications of industrial electronic systems. The final paper Submission deadline of this third IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Annual Online Conference is on 30 October 2024.

ICIT 2025 will be held 26-28 March 2025 in Wuhan, China and focuses on intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, and power electronics.

This paper explores how a Smart Transformer can upgrade the existing airport power system, enabling an efficient interface for renewable energy, electric vehicles and the future hybrid/electric aircraft, substituting the ground power units and enabling a smarter behavior of the electrical grid.
