ANNOUNCEMENTS

I am honored and grateful to have served as the President of the Industrial Electronics Society for the past two years. My role as President has been made extremely easy due to the high quality of the IES officers and AdCom. We are a unique Society within IEEE with our large volunteer base, but at the same time we are one of the more successful Societies within IEEE. I want to point out just a few notable things about my tenure as President. We celebrated our 70th anniversary in 2021, we conducted all of our AdCom meetings virtually, and we passed the 10,000-memberships mark. These are exciting times for IES. As we start another year, I am confident that Mariusz Malinowski will lead our society to new and exciting areas. Thank you, IES family, for all of your support.

The aim of the special section is to provide a timely opportunity for researchers, practicing engineers, and other stakeholders to share their latest discoveries in the areas of renewable energy systems, such as photovoltaic systems, wind power systems, and related energy storage systems, in the context of the smart operational solutions.

NEWS IN OUR SOCIETY

Most people call him Juan, but in the IES family, he is known as Juan-Jo. It was a pleasure to interview our IES Vice President for Conference Activities to get to know him better, professionally and personally. Check our full interview and learn more about "Captain" Juan-Jo and about the exciting projects our community will experience within the next two years!

The 5th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS) will be held 24 to 26 May 2022, hosted by the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK. ICPS 2022 aims to provide a platform to share quality research and professional interactions for the development of sciences in regard to Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems.

MEET OUR TECHNICAL COMMITTEES

The IEEE-IES covers various applications of electronic and electrical science to enhance industrial and manufacturing processes. In contrast to traditional model-based methodologies, data-driven monitoring and control approaches make use of the information obtained from the available measurements for the safety and reliability of the complex processes. The IEEE-IES Technical Committee on Data-Driven Control and Monitoring aims to provide a forum for expertise of IES members to exchange their latest achievements and to identify critical issues and challenges for future investigation on control, monitoring, fault diagnosis and optimization with complex industrial applications.

The IEEE-IES encompasses a wide range of R&D areas that are fundamentally related to smart grids operation: from definition of control and scheduling approaches to the testing of those using hardware in the loop technologies to the final field deployment.

Therefore, the IEEE-IES Technical Committee on Smart Grids brings together expertise of IES members to address technical challenges from a system viewpoint for the advancement of power systems. People are welcome to get involved in our activities and join our technical committee.

FEATURED TECHNICAL ARTICLES

In this paper a finite control set model predictive control is used to track a current reference in a power converter connected to an RL load. An artificial intelligence (AI) approach is presented for real-time determination of the weighting factor that regulates the average switching frequency, independently of the operating point. The paper focuses on the design, training, and digital implementation of an artificial neural network (ANN) that can be developed in a low-cost control platform.

This paper proposes a constant switching frequency multiple-vector-based FCS-MPCC scheme to solve the shortages that limit the application of the model predictive current control (MPCC) method for multi-phase motors. The proposed scheme selects optimal V3s and their duty ratios in two orthogonal subspaces. In this approach, the optimal V3s and their duty ratios are directly obtained from the principle of deadbeat current control without time-consuming enumeration-based state predictions and cost function calculations.

PAST IES WEBINARS – CATCH UP NOW!

By Duc Truong Pham (University of Birmingham, United Kingdom) - 20 October 2021

This presentation investigates disassembly science and devises intelligent disassembly strategies and plans and develops human-robot collaborative disassembly techniques. The aim is to allow disassembly to be reliably performed either with minimal human intervention or in a collaborative fashion by man and machine.

By Davide Barater (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy) - 21 October 2021

In this webinar, the impact of high-frequency switching on magnetics is investigated in terms of high-frequency modelling, high-speed measurement, insulation partial discharge and reliability analysis together with proposed mitigation solutions and experimental validation.
