NEWS IN OUR SOCIETY

In our June eNewsletter, you heard about the IES humanitarian initiative for a campus located in San Matias municipality of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. A project aiming to improve the health and education by introducing off-grid solar powered lighting, charging station, and cooking fans.

In this message from John P. Nelson, President of IEEE Smart Village, you will discover behind the scenes how our IEEE IES heroes finally achieved this project despite numerous obstacles!

MEET OUR TECHNICAL COMMITTEES

The IEEE-IES encompasses a wide range of R&D areas that are fundamentally related to Power Electronics, from Power Generation, Transmission, to the End User, and is well positioned to tackle large scale R&D issues in Power Electronics of cross-disciplinary nature that require an integrated multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, the IEEE IES Technical Committee on Power Electronics brings together expertise of IES members to address technical challenges from a system viewpoint for the advancement of Power Electronics technology.

People are welcome to get involved in our activities and join our technical committee to perform studies.

Standards benefit organizations in quality, lead time, supply chain management and costs. Standards TC recommends Standards of Engineering Practices to be followed in Fields of Interest of IES, coordinates and facilitates standards across the technical activities of IES, assists other TCs and IES members that generate and develop IEEE standards in its Field of Interest. Recent work includes developing standards in emerging areas of industrial sensors and systems, industrial communications, industrial agents, industrial power and energy systems, industrial wireless technologies, multi-access edge computing, and digital transformation. It also establishes Centers of Expertise providing interoperability and compliance services for industry and users, and holds InterOp Plugfests at IES conferences.

FEATURED TECHNICAL ARTICLE

Fault diagnosis and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction are always two major issues in modern industrial systems, which are usually regarded as two separated tasks to make the problem easier but ignore the fact that there is certain information of these two tasks that can be shared to improve the performance. In this paper, to capture common features between different relative problems, a joint-loss convolutional neural network (JL-CNN) architecture is proposed in this paper. Results show that the proposed method has great advantage compared with SVM and CNN. It can be applied for the intercrossed applications.

Z packed U-cell (ZPUC) converter topology is presented in this paper as a new type of multilevel converter topology that can be operated in a single phase as well as in three-phase configurations while using a single DC source. A full topology sequence of operation and performance analysis of ZPUC based on the 5-L inverter is investigated and experimentally validated on a 3 kVA prototype. The obtained results illustrate the good dynamic performance of the proposed topology and the implemented integrated switching pattern voltage balancing.
