NEWS IN OUR SOCIETY

In this IEEE TEC podcast on Technology Transfer and Commercialization, Sheldon Williamson speaks with Dr. Marc Perron, Deep Tech Commercialization Expert and Senior IEEE Member. Marc explains the step-by-step procedures of how to market an idea from incubation. You will become more familiar with Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), a method developed at NASA for estimating the maturity of technologies during the acquisition phase of a program.

For the third time in 70 years, our Industrial Electronics Society AdCom happened online during the weekend of 12th and 13th of June. With a record of around 100 persons attending, our Administration Committee hits its stride. During two half days (that were actually nights for some of our members), many exciting presentations, news and initiatives were brought. Read the full article to learn more about the highlights of the meeting.

The 2021 IEEE Energy Conversion Conference and Expo (ECCE) is making its West Coast rotation to Vancouver, Canada, 10-14 October 2021. This flagship conference from our sister Society PELS is a podium for presenting the latest power electronics, electric machines, and drives research, their applications, and engineering training. For those unable to travel to the event, the program will run in parallel using Vfairs, a widely adopted virtual event platform, providing participants with the closest “in-person” experience possible. The exhibition takes place over the first two days, at the height of conference attendance.

MEET OUR TECHNICAL COMMITTEES

IEEE-IES Technical Committee on Control, Robotics, and Mechatronics covers the specific area of robotic applications. Robots are complex mechatronics systems, which need precise path planning and control of motion. Robots are also meant to cooperate with humans, accepting orders from them. We have been working also on Intelligent Spaces (iSpaces) which have functions of understanding environments by networking sensors and serving people by using Mechatronics/Robotics devices. In iSpaces, Robotics play important roles from a viewpoint of human-machine interaction, covering technologies like gesture recognition, voice recognition, human face recognition, etc.

The Electrical Machines Technical Committee (EMTC) is a group of specialists working in industry as well as academia on electromechanical energy conversion systems based on electrical machines and power electronics.

The applications considered include transportation electrification, grid-connected systems, energy production from renewables, energy harvesting, fault-tolerant systems, and high-efficiency industrial conversion systems.

EMTC and its members are strongly involved in the organization of international conferences and symposiums like International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM), Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Drive (SDEMPED), Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD).

FEATURED TECHNICAL ARTICLE

This paper proposes a single-phase switched-mode bridgeless ac-dc buck-boost derived converter that can serve as a front-end converter for the on-board Electric Vehicle charging application. A comprehensive steady-state analysis for one switching cycle and the design equations of the proposed converter are presented. The small-signal model of the proposed converter is presented for the implementation of the closed-loop control. Experimental results from a 1.0-kW concept-proof hardware prototype have been demonstrated, which upholds the converter analysis.

In this article, the authors propose a new control strategy for a class of underactuated systems that can treat the various constraints including actuated and unactuated state constraints and the constraints on some specific composite variables. Specifically, the authors elaborately design some new auxiliary terms that are composed of constrained variable signals and actuated velocity signals. The proposed method is applied to a double pendulum crane system and a tower crane system to verify its superior performance by experiments.
