21 February 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of the Industrial Electronics Society! We have surpassed the 9000-member mark which is an all-time high for the Society. IES is a very strong Society from the standpoint of finances and volunteers. IES was also one of the first IEEE Societies to embrace the world as a technical Society. Today our membership truly reflects an international Society, we have members from more than 100 countries worldwide. Happy 70th Anniversary IES!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

The Industrial Electronics Society is soliciting now the Support to Student Branch Chapters Local Activities 2021. The deadline for applying is 5 April 2021.

The purpose of the IES-SBCLA program is to support technical activities of an IEEE IES Student Branch Chapter with a grant of up to US$1,000 (depending on the activity size). Please read the guidelines to apply for the SBCLA grant in the full article.

Prof. Okyay Kaynak, one of our long-term IES volunteers, received the prestigious 2020 TÜBA Academy Prize at the Presidential Palace in Ankara from the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Turkish Academy of Sciences awarded his works and contributions on the sliding mode control method developed by using artificial intelligence and artificial neural network techniques in his applications and studies in the fields of industrial process control, aviation, vehicle control, robotics, and automation.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

The first volume of the IEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society is now published!

MEET OUR TECHNICAL COMMITTEES
 
 
 
 

Developing science and technologies in many different directions and working toward their integration in industrial settings has been the leading concept of the founders of the IES. In these days, while celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Society is still continuing in its effort of promoting the multidisciplinary development of science and technology, covering many different areas of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In this action, all the current 24 Technical Committees (TCs) of the IES play a crucial role.

In this new section of ITEN, starting in this issue, we will present you all our TCs, which are operating in many different areas of the Industrial Electronics. In the short descriptions that you can read in this section, you will surely find something that triggers your interest. Do not hesitate to visit the TCs’ websites by clicking on the link at the end of each presentation. You will get more info, material, news etc., and the possibility to join great groups of talented people.

At the dawn of the 4th industrial revolution, the use of software agents, service-oriented architectures and related technologies as primary constructs of cyber-physical industrial systems is of high relevance. Current developments in this area have been consistently supported by an active community of researchers and practitioners whereas one of it is the IEES IES Technical Committee on Industrial Agents (TCIA). It provides a forum bringing together researchers and application sector specialists contributing to the advancement and application of industrial agent technology in distributed production, services, and infrastructure sectors.

In this work two different modulation strategies termed: i) nearest level control, and ii) phase disposition-sinusoidal pulse width modulation, are described, simulated and compared when applied to a Hexverter-based modular multilevel converter. In addition, two different voltage balancing algorithms are implemented and evaluated. Furthermore, total harmonic distortion regarding three-phase system voltages are assessed. In the end, synthesized branch voltage spectrum for each modulation strategy is analyzed.
