IEEE Region 9 - EDS Members Develop Engineering Solutions for Local Communities in Colombia

Volunteer members of the IEEE EDS Universidad de los Andes Student Chapter in Colombia helped to develop a water quality monitoring system. The “community technology literacy IEEE” project successfully developed a two-parameter (pH and conductivity) water quality meter designated as PortAqua. The main characteristics of the device are modular, low-cost, intended to be used for non-technical users, with a friendly interface and aimed to be assembled by each user. PortAqua was also used as a teaching tool in order to allow the local academic community to understand water quality measurement techniques and local regulations.

IEEE Region 10 - IEEE EDS Design Innovation for Emergency Preparedness and Sustainability

The IEEE EDS sponsored an online-based workshop on Electronic Gadget Design in Malaysia. The event was hosted by the Malaysian EDS Chapter, Prof. Muhammad Hussain of the University of California Berkeley and Ms. Wedyan Babatain of KAUST, Saudi Arabia. This unique workshop was attended by 15 undergraduate and graduate students who are studying in seven different universities in Malaysia. The students were organized into four groups and went through a seven step process involving team formation, survey, brainstorming, planning, development, testing and optimization for 6 weeks. At completion of the workshop, the students demonstrated the following projects: floor mat to detect if someone has an accidental fall; a greenhouse monitor and automated control system; a piezoelectric energy harvester and touchless toilet cleaning system.

This event was supported under IEEE EDS Design Innovation for Emergency Preparedness and Sustainability Program and will be offered in South America, South Asia and Middle East/North Africa. Visit our society webpage to see other projects sponsored by EDS.

Be Wary of Email Scams Targeting IEEE Members

IEEE Executive Director, Stephen Welby, reminds IEEE members and staff to remain alert to the risk of fraudulent emails and to maintain continued vigilance online.

He states that, "These fraudulent email messages have used spoofed addresses to pose as someone known to the recipient. Fraudulent messages often contain personal details about IEEE members drawn from non-IEEE online sources and from social media sites accessible by search engines. These emails attempt to commit financial fraud by exploiting the professionalism and camaraderie among IEEE members. These fraudulent messages often include a request for urgent assistance and will ask the recipient to transfer funds or goods to a third party."
