Message from EDS President, Ravi Todi

The Strategic Planning Workshop is taking place on 10-11 June 2022. I am eager to engage with the delegates in discussions about the future of the Society. What we expect for the outcome of the Workshop is a set of recommendations to be presented to the Board of Governors and Forum for implementation where appropriate. Specifically, the Workshop will affirm our vision statement, mission, strategic goals, and core values. It will also recommend a vision narrative and a deployment plan in the form of six Key Performance Indicators which are intended to assess how well the Society is progressing in realizing its vision.

2022 IEEE EDS William R. Cherry Award Winner Selected!

This year's award will be presented to Stephen R. Forrest at the 49th IEEE Photovoltaics Specialists Conference (PVSC), in Philadelphia.

The IEEE EDS William R. Cherry Award is named in honor of William R. Cherry, a founder of the photovoltaic community. In the 1950's, he was instrumental in establishing solar cells as the ideal power source for space satellites and for recognizing, advocating, and nurturing the use of photovoltaic systems for terrestrial applications. The William R. Cherry award was instituted in 1980, shortly after his death. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual engineer or scientist who devoted a part of their professional life to the advancement of the science and technology of photovoltaic energy conversion.

Ilesanmi Adesida, IEEE Fellow, and provost at Nazarbayev University in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan

Adesida is an expert in the processing of semiconductors and other materials at the nanometer-scale level and in ultra-high-speed heterostructure field-effect transistors—the sort of transistors used in cell-phones, fiber optics communications, deep space communications, and other applications. His contributions have provided insights into the limits of advanced lithography and other nanofabrication techniques.[1]
