Delighted to introduce the publication of our latest issue of IEEE Journal on Flexible Electronics (J-FLEX) (Volume 2, Issue 5), a Special Issue on Flexible Electronics for Emerging Markets and Developing Economies. Flexible electronics technology, a rapidly growing field, will have a significant impact on human societies around the world in the coming years. The emerging markets and developing economies (EMDE) currently have roughly 85% of the world’s population, represent about 80% of the countries, and contribute close to 40% of the gross domestic product and purchasing power—and these numbers are expected to increase in the coming years. This Special Issue highlights these innovations and opportunities. Featured on our J-FLEX cover is the opportunistic ecosystem for practical real-world use cases for “Emerging Markets and Developing Economies.” Applications are illustrated for real-time health care monitoring and storing information in the cloud; edible electronics communicating with the outside world gadgets; and flexible electronic components including a flexible heater. The recycling symbols reminds us flexible electroncs provides a “green” alternative.
