2024 NPSS ELECTION RESULTS
2024 NPSS ELECTION RESULTS
The 2024 NPSS election was held recently to fill three vacancies on the NPSS Administrative Committee and serve a four year term commencing 1 January 2025. I am pleased to announce the outcome of the election.
At the time of writing this part of newsletter, we are wrapping up the 2024 IEEE NSS/MIC/RTSD in Tampa, FL which is being held from 26 October to 2 November. The Medical Imaging Conference (MIC) for which NMISC has primary responsibilities was run smoothly with many interesting presentations organized by two highly dedicated program chairs, Georges El Fakhri and Kira Grogg.
The hybrid nature of the most recent three NSS/MIC/RTSD conferences has allowed delivery of content to folks who cannot attend. It also provides attendees the chance to view any parallel sessions they missed, or sessions they would like to revisit again. A reminder that by the time this update goes to press, there will only be a short window to review recordings from this conference.
The IEEE Radiation Effects Committee (REC) held its annual Open Meeting on 25 July at the 2024 Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) in Ottawa, Canada. The meeting was chaired by Kay Chesnut, chair of the Radiation Effects Steering Group, which oversees NSREC Conferences.
Introducing awardees for the 2024 IEEE/NPSS Radiation Effects Award, 2024 IEEE/NPSS Radiation Effects Early Achievement Award, and the 2024 IEEE/NPSS Radiation Effects Award for Exemplary Service to Meetings & Conferences.
The NPSS sponsors a variety of awards, which are described at: https://ieee-npss.org/awards/npss-awards/. The deadline for receiving nominations for most of these awards is 31 January of each year.
Nomination Portal for IEEE Fellow Class of 2026 Opens
We are excited to announce that the Fellow Portal reopened in November 2024 for nominations for the IEEE Fellow Class of 2026. This prestigious recognition celebrates significant contributions to the fields of electrical and electronics engineering. The deadline for submission is 7 February 2025.
Dr. Zane Bell, the current Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science (TNS), will be retiring from that position in 2025. As a result, the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) is undertaking a search for a new Editor-in Chief (EiC) of this journal, which is sponsored by this Society.
Young Professionals: From Membership to Leadership
NPSS and its conference organizing committee members are always trying to provide a variety of resources for its Young Professionals. In particular, starting this year, NPSS is introducing the “From Membership to Leadership (M2L)” initiative at various conferences. The purpose of this initiative is to introduce young members of our society to service opportunities via the IEEE/NPSS Membership Table.
School of Space Qualification (SSQ) Held in Mooloolaba, Australia
The 2024 IEEE NPSS School of Space Qualification (SSQ) took place in Mooloolaba, Australia, 12 – 15 February. It was organized by the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP), University of Wollongong under NPSS Educational Committee (EduCom) with co-sponsorship from the Australian Space Agency (ASA), University of Wollongong (UOW) and University of New South Wales (UNSW).
First Winner of the “Schools to Conference” Travel Grant Attends NSS/MIC/RTSD 2024
The new “Schools to Conference” travel grant allows us to invite a participant of an EduCom school to attend a NPSS conference (or similar event). The grant is financed by NPSS as an initiative for the years 2024-2026.
The Rabat IEEE NPSS EDUCOM International Summer School (REISS) was held at the Faculté des Sciences, University Mohamed V of Rabat, Morocco from 1 - 10 July 2024.
Several of the conferences and schools under the IEEE NPSS umbrella hold IEEE Women in engineering (WIE) events to inspire and support women in the field, as well as help everyone build more inclusive workspaces. This year, events were held at ICOPS, RADECS and NSREC conferences as well as the schools in Jakarta, Indonesia and Rabat, Morocco.
On 14 September 2024, the Osaka University Office at Fukushima was the site of an impactful and forward-thinking event: the IEEE NPSS Climate Change Workshop, sponsored by the IEEE NPSS Climate Change Initiative preceded and followed by the Osaka University and the IEEE NPSS EduCom Schools.
Having Fun with Numbers: Expressing the Speed of Light as a Power of π
The irrational number π plays an important role in geometry and trigonometry. It also appears in the expressions of some fundamental physical quantities and equations, such as in the expression of the period of a pendulum or in the value of the reduced Planck’s constant. Here, I show that the speed of light in free space can be expressed in terms of a power of π.
