Panel Posts on Recent Activities

Avionics Systems Panel (ASP)

  • Earlier this year the Panel sponsored two conferences jointly with the AIAA:
    1. Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) in September at San Diego, CA.  DASC was

notable in every aspect in 2019 with 335 registered attendees, 60 individuals participated in 155 tutorial sessions across nine tutorials, and over 200 papers presented in eight tracks. This is the first DASC to hold a joint reception for DASC attendees with IEEE Young Professionals and IEEE Women in Engineering. The conference had one of the best DASC revenue surpluses over the past twenty years. The keynote and the opening panel discussions focused on modern aviation challenges such as unmanned aircraft operations, artificial intelligence, machine learning, air-traffic management, etc.

    1. DASC 2020 will be held in San Antonio, TX, 11-15 October.
    2. (2) Integration Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) Conference in April at Dulles, VA: ICNS had over 175 attendees from fifteen countries and twenty US states.

ICNS 2020 will be held in Herndon, VA, 21-23April.

  •  IEEE and Aviation Standards: ASP members support several standard activities such as the IEEE P1920.1 and Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Low Latency Sub-Committee. The ASP Chair is also the Chair of joint RTCA/EUROCAE Internet Protocol Suite Standards Committee. He is an advisor to FAA at ICAO Cyber Security, Internet and RTCA Unmanned Air Vehicle C2 Link System standards committees.
  • ASP members Chaired the DASC Student Paper Awards committee. An ASP member has been selected again to Chair the Student Paper Awards for 2020.
  • Several ASP members offered Distinguished Lectures in five countries. In addition, members are actively working to develop short courses that can be offered through the IEEE. ASP members also offered tutorials at DASC in September.
  •  ASP held a joint session with the Cyber Panel at the DASC. As cyber concerns and challenges impact the aviation industry, the ASP members are driving cyber innovation and standards to mitigate attacks and threats for the future of aviation.
  • ASP members are actively engaged in UAV/UAM research on four continents. The UAM plenary discussion at DASC was attended by senior executives from leading UAM industries and government technologists.
  • The ASP is looking forward to another exciting year of growth and contributions.

Gyro and Accelerometer Panel (GAP)

The next GAP meeting will be held in San Antonio in January at Southwest Research Institute. In March, the next meeting will be in Phoenix at Ideal Aerosmith. Four more meetings are planned in 2020. If you are interested in participating in the development of any of the GAP activities, contact the panel Chair ([email protected]).

  • The revision of IEEE Std 952, “IEEE Standard for Specifying and Testing Single-Axis Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyros,” is in progress.  The balloting pool has been formed and Mandatory Editorial Coordination (MEC) has been completed.  The plan is to complete the balloting of this revision in 2020.
  • The revision of IEEE Std 1559, “IEEE Standard for Inertial Systems Terminology” is in progress.  About 50 new definitions and acronyms have been added to the existing 262.  The plan is to send it out to ballot in 2020.
  • The development of IEEE Std 1780, “Draft Standard for the Specification of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)” continues.
  • The next standard (after 952 and 1559) to be revised is IEEE Std 1431, “IEEE Standard for Specifying and Testing Coriolis Vibratory Gyros.  The plan is to submit for a PAR in 2020.

Radar Systems Panel (RSP)

2020 will see two outstanding conferences on radar sponsored by the IEEE. The first will be the International Radar Conference (RADAR2020) that will be held in the Washington area, 27 April -1 May. The second is the IEEE Radar Conference (RadarConf20) that will be held in Florence, Italy,  21-25 September. Paper review and submission processes are underway, respectively. Both will be exceptional events that are not to be missed.

The RSP studied the prospect of a new Transactions on Radar journal and sent the report to the Board of Governors.

And in case you missed the 4th quarter AESS QEB issue, the Radar Systems Panel reported extensively on a vision for future radar directions. It is worthwhile reading.

Glue Technologies for Space Systems Panel (Approved Spring 2019)

  • The first 2020 Panel Meeting will be held in the USA at the IEEE Aerospace Conference (Big Sky, MT), 11 March 2020
  • Elections of panel chair, vice-chair and secretary will start soon (candidates have been identified)
  • Some papers dealing with Glue-Tech panel topics, where the panel has been mentioned in the acknowledgements, have been submitted to journals and conferences
  • The panel description paper, with contributions of panel proposers and founder members, is in press for the IEEE AES Magazine.
  • Seeking volunteers for 2021 Conference positions. New initiatives for 2021 IEEE Aerospace Conference (company demonstrations, students’ competitions, etc.)
  • Seeking  new panel members especially in filling technology gap expertise on the Panel
  • The second 2020 panel meeting will be in the Fall (Rome, Italy), followed by the first Glue Tech Summer School.

Navigation Systems Panel (NSP)

Panel members have been involved in paper solicitation and selection for the upcoming IEEE/ION Precision , Location, and Navigation Symposium in Portland, OR, 20-23 April. Panel members have also  submittedd a paper to Systems Magazine discussing state estimation in navigation systems.

Cyber Security Panel (CSP)

The Cyber Security Panel Chair is on the Program Technical Committee for the 2020 IEEE-NCOSE-NDIA Systems Security Symposium, Crystal City, VA to be held 6-9 April. The AESS Treasurer is the Program Chair of the symposium.  The AESS is a Member Society of the IEEE Systems Security Council.

Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee (ACGSC)

The last meeting of 2019 was held 16-18 October in Williamsburg, Virginia. Short and full committee briefings were held within the panel topic areas of aircraft and surface vehicles, missiles and space, avionics and systems, dynamics and analysis, and flight, propulsion, and autonomous control.  Two meetings are planned for 2020 and date and locations are TBD.
