Meet the AdCom: Salvo Baglio, Your 2020 IMS President!

Where are you from? What’s something we might not know about it?
I’m “Italian” but, more than this, I am and I feel “Sicilian!” I proudly bring the inheritance of this triangular piece of land where many cultures have transited and stayed, resulting in the current melting pot of modern and ancient culture that is Sicily.

Sicily is a place, as someone once said, where you can travel “in space and time,” passing from ancient Greece to ancient Rome; from the Arab world to France and the Normans; from walking through the mythological mount Etna where the god Vulcano was supposed to live guarded by cyclops, to looking at the rocks in Aci Trezza that were mentioned in Homer’s masterwork the Odyssey.

I could go on about many more enchanted things, but I have no words to describe the flavors and sensations of Sicilian food—you simply must come here and taste it!

What was your very first job, and did you enjoy it?
My very first job was during university as a piano teacher at a second-grade school. I loved teaching music, but working with pre-teenager kids was really hard. It is much better and easier to teach music to Masters and PhD students!

After finishing my PhD at the University of Catania, I worked for a short time as consultant at STMicroelectronics and then as a lecturer of Automatic Control at the University of Messina. Now I am a faculty member at the University of Catania.

What do you do in your role as the I&M Society President?
It may sound like too much, but I really believe that my role is to represent the I&M Society and each of our members both at the central IEEE level and, beyond that, in society at large.

What are you hoping to achieve in your term as the I&M Society President?
Our Society has done a lot and has achieved great results, but still there much that can be done to spread more of the culture and the concepts of instrumentation and measurements. Our discipline is transversal to many others and therefore "cross fertilization" and “contamination" should be our leading keywords together with enforcing our cultural identity.

What's the best piece of advice you were ever given?
Many! Maybe too many! But each of them precious; each of them coming from a wise person, a good friend, that I have in my greatest esteem. I store all of these pieces of advice in a secret and well-guarded place.

What's something about you that would surprise most people?
I get deadly scared by horror movies and books!
