President's Message

At the end of the year, the Society experiences times, as in your personal life, of renewal, reflection, and plans for the next year. The renewal of leaders of the Society is carried out at different levels, through the elections of our officers periodically, as well as new members of the Board of Governors. I want to welcome the newly-elected Society Officer and the newly-elected Members-at-Large of the Board of Governors, as well as the new members of the Society elevated to the Class of IEEE Fellows. This is proof of the functioning of the renewal of the positions and, together with the awards, of the recognition of professional development in our Society. You can find more information about all of our activities in this newsletter.

If you desire to serve our community as a leader in any initiative, I encourage you to write to our Society Operations Manager ([email protected]).

In the last issue of this newsletter, I informed you about the preparations for the participation of EdSoc in partnership with IEEE Educational Activities (EA), in the next IEEE Education Week. IEEE Education Week, in the first edition, is a week-long celebration of IEEE's impact globally in Pre-University STEM, University, and Continuing Professional Education in the Spring of 2022. Now I am pleased to inform you that we have carefully developed a program that we hope will be of interest to you and representative of the entire Society. This includes holding panels with the participation of chapter leaders, students, on diversity, webinars on training in classroom best practices, Open Educational Resources, publication of posters of student academic papers, publication in journals on engineering education or about the Tomorrow's Classroom Ecosystem. In the next issue, and through all our social channels you will receive more information.

Also, in line with the Society's strategic partnership with IEEE Educational Activities (EA), and to provide new opportunities to our members, I also want to highlight the active participation of EdSoc in the Courses Categorization Project, whose purpose has been to review the courses in the IEEE Learning Network (ILN) to determine their accuracy, relevance, positioning, and job titles. We received great feedback from our members regarding this initiative. IEEE Education Society Volunteers have reviewed 30 Courses. We received 212 reviewer applications to participate, and 57 reviewers were assigned for the 30 courses. This project will probably continue into next year.

Another line that we want to develop in this term of my presidency is an Open Data Policy. In this sense, we have begun to collaborate with IEEE DataPort. IEEE DataPort provides value for all researchers by allowing them to store their research data and link it to their published paper. Research shows that articles with data receive more citations than articles without data. At the moment, a new category of datasets called "Education and Learning Technologies" has been created and our journals are already integrated with IEEE DataPort.

Now I invite you to read the rest of the sections of this newsletter. I hope you enjoy all the information, news, and opportunities that our leaders present here for your professional development.

Finally, let me, personally and on behalf of the entire Board of Governors and the Operations Team, convey to you my best wishes for these days accompanied by your families and close friends, and the best for the new year 2022.

I remain, along with our Board of Governors, and our Society Operations Manager, Madison Musselman, at your disposal.

Thank you for your commitment to the IEEE Education Society.
