President's Message

The IEEE Education Society's vision is to be a global leader in Engineering Education. The Society’s achievements depend largely on the work and effort of volunteers like you and me, along with the help of many others. In addition to being part of a community of professionals, this Society, and the IEEE in general, offers us multiple opportunities to develop our leadership skills, governance rules to facilitate rotation in all their positions, and career development within the organization. These opportunities are particularly relevant for me: I am a professor at the Universidad Politécnica of Madrid, and I believe, as an educator, researcher, and promoter, in the value in technologies applied to education and open education. After being a member of the Society for more than 15 years, co-founding the Spanish Chapter, and serving 10 years in different positions on the Board of Governors, I am honored to have been elected to serve as President in 2021-22.

One of the most rewarding opportunities this position offers me is to have the opportunity to talk to you and share with you the latest news from our community quarterly through this newsletter. In this edition we introduce new sections, giving greater visibility to the trajectory of our referents of recently elevated IEEE Fellow members. In this Newsletter, you will be able to meet the recently-elevated IEEE Fellow members of the Society, as well as showcase role models from our chapters around the world. Also, in this issue, the Hong Kong Chapter explains how they engage with different IEEE Organization Units and support Universities and K12 Schools in Advanced Teaching and Learning.

In addition, along with the news provided by our leaders in the Society, I will take the opportunity to introduce you to the Society from within. Thus, one of my first tasks has been to appoint different internal positions as well as our representatives in different IEEE Committees that will help us establish important policies in our Society regarding Women in Engineering, Young Professionals, and Diversity and Inclusion.

Together at IEEE EdSoc, we support each other to face the new challenges as a consequence of the pandemic. In 2021, IEEE has developed a series of priorities that give rise to new opportunities such as multidisciplinary collaboration, including a greater commitment to the chapters, entrepreneurs, and continuing education. The Education Society, over the next two years, will prioritize the alignment with IEEE strategy, to strengthen ourselves as an organization and to increase our capability for providing you, and our Chapters, the best services and products in Education, Conferences, Publications, Standards, and in any other initiatives we can support for the development of your professional career.
