The Story Behind the Success
Benjamin Kirk

Having my work selected as one of the top three papers in the student paper competition at the 2019 IEEE Radar conference is truly an honor. The AESS community has been a source of inspiration, as well as relevant material for my research, which makes it even more exciting to receive this recognition from the organization that has meant so much to me. However, the credit for this achievement does not belong to me alone. The support of my many mentors and colleagues played an integral role in this success.

My advisor, Dr. Ram Narayanan, has had a great impact on my research career: shaping good research habits and providing insight into the field of radar. Through my collaboration with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory with Dr. Anthony Martone, Dr. Kyle Gallagher, and Kelly Sherbondy, I have had great technical and operational guidance as I pursue my research goals. From digging into the details of writing code, to endless scrutinizing of my figures, all these mentors have played a significant role in my success.

I come from a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania and grew up with an interest in “how things work,” from farm work to natural systems to technical applications. I also have great appreciation for music and the effort that goes into composing and mixing a masterpiece. Listening to music has always been a great way for me to clear my mind and composing music has been an amazing creative outlet for me. I like to think that much of the creativity that goes into the digital signal processing and mixing of a musical track translates to creative ways to perform signal processing for radar and vice versa. In my work, titled “Cognitive Software-Defined Radar: Evaluation of Target Detection with RFI Avoidance,” an adaptive radar operation scheme is used to share the RF spectrum with other signals in real-time. The goal of this work, not unlike that of an audio mastering engineer, is to share a given spectrum with multiple signals so that all may coexist harmoniously.

The goal of my PhD research is to push the limits of implementing cognitive capabilities into a real-time radar system, and to further develop the benefits this kind of system can offer as we address the challenges facing our world today. The recognition of my work at the IEEE Radar conference, among professionals and giants in the field of radar, has only increased my drive to push forward with my goals.
