Panel Posts on Recent Activities

Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee
The first meeting of the year was held 27-29 March in Santa Fe, NM. Short and full technical briefs on technical interest areas were presented. The meeting was preceded by a short course on System Identification on 26 Marchby Dr. Gene Morelli, NASA, Langley. The next meeting will be held on October 16-18 at a location TBD.

Avionics Systems Panel (ASP)
The Avionics systems Panel is holding monthly teleconferences with the team members to coordinate activities of the committees. The Awards Committee is developing a process to identify suitable candidates who can be nominated for existing IEEE/AESS awards. Also, members of the committee are supporting the Student Paper Award activities for DASC 2019 by chairing the DASC student paper evaluation process. Also, several ASP members will attend DASC and be on-site judges to evaluate student papers.

The Conference Committee successfully concluded the ICNS conference where 88 technical papers were presented. 267 abstracts were approved for DASC this year with the expectation that about 220 papers will be presented at the conference. DASC is generating good interest from the aviation industry. Also, DASC is planning to hold a Young Professionals and Women in Engineering Event at DASC.

The Research and Innovation Committee Is writing a paper titled “Frontiers in Air and Space Traffic Management” for the Systems Magazine. The paper will be available for ASP member review by end of July.

The Education Committee is supporting the tutorial activities at DASC. Currently, 18 tutorials are planned for DASC, which will be offered over Sunday and Monday preceding the conference. Several ASP members will be tutorial instructors.

UAV Liaison Committee is working to develop a plan and identifying several work areas for collaboration with the AESS UAV Panel. These will be discussed during the DASC if UAV Panel can join DASC for a face to face meeting.

The Cyber Security Liaison Panel is also planning a joint ASP-Cyber meeting at DASC. The Cyber Panel Chair is working with ASP to plan this meeting.

Cyber Security Panel (CSP)
The AESS Cyber Security panel promotes and supports cyber security technical activities in those aspects of cyber security relevant to complex systems for space, air, ocean, or ground environments. The vision of the panel is to serve as a hub of AESS cyber security activities, promoting and highlighting technical activities, understanding and developments in this increasingly important field. The panel focus is on cyber security in AESS environments and systems, such as in aviation and aerospace. Topics of interest include cyber security vulnerabilities and countermeasures for transportation, traffic surveillance and navigation, including GPS, and information security for complex systems.

In 2019, two early fall meetings will be held to correspond with two AESS conferences with multiple tracks related to the interests of the panel: the 38th Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) in San Diego, California, and the 53rd International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology (ICCST) Chennai, India. The panel has begun work on a special issue on for the IEEE AESS Systems Magazine. Are you active in cyber security and interested in participating on this panel? Prospective members can contact the panel chair, Prof. Kathleen Kramer.

Glue Technologies for Space Systems Panel (GTSS) NEW
The kick-off meeting of the panel will be held on Friday 27 September2019 in Rome (Italy). The meeting location will be in the premises of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Via del Politecnico snc, 00133, Rome. Meeting room and agenda will be distributed one month before the event. Arrangements for participation in remote will be set up for people that will not be able to attend in Rome.

A paper "Summary of Glue Technologies for Space Systems" for Systems Magazine is being prepared by Prof. Sacchi.

Gyro and Accelerometer Panel (GAP)
The GAP’s last meeting was held in Heath, OH on 6-7 May. The systems committee approved about 40 new definitions / acronyms for inclusion in the next revision of IEEE Std 1559, “Standard for Inertial Systems Terminology.” Worked continued on developing P1780, “Standard Specification Format Guide for Inertial Measurement Units (IMU).” The sensors committee started preparing the draft of P952, “IEEE Standard Specification Format Guide and Test Procedure for Single-Axis Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyros” for ballot. The next GAP meeting will be held in Redmond, WA on 15-16 July . If you are interested in participating in the development of any of the GAP activities, contact the panel Chair. Navigation Systems Panel (NSP)
Summary of recent activities – June 2019
The Navigation Systems Panel (NSP) met via telcon on 12 June 2019. An update on planning for the 2020 Position, Location and Navigation Symposium (PLANS 2020) was provided by Zak Kassas and included the major tracks, track chairs, session format and a discussion regarding plenary speakers. The panel also discussed the potential creation of a new navigation conference to augment the existing biennial PLANS. The panel’s next meeting will be held in September.

Radar Systems Panel (RSP)
In April the Radar Systems Panel (RSP) supported an extremely successful IEEE Radar Conference in Boston, with a record overall attendance of 728, including 146 students, 305 people attending a diverse array of radar tutorials, and 59 taking part in the Radar Summer School. After a rigorous review process, 320 papers were selected for presentation, including 125 that also participated in the student paper contest.

The RSP is now gearing up for the International Radar Conference that will be held in Toulon in September. With a diverse and interesting array of papers against the beautiful backdrop of France's Mediterranean coast, this is sure to be quite an exciting conference.

A RSP member is writing an RSP article for IEEE Systems Magazine on The Spectrum Shell Game.

Space Systems Panel (SSP)
SSP members are preparing a Systems Magazine article on space systems and autonomous trains and cars titled: High integrity multimodal GNSS architectures for eco-friendly transportation.
