Panel Posts on Recent Activities

Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee
The first meeting of the year will be held 27-29 March in Santa Fe, NM. Short and full technical briefs on technical interest areas will be presented. The meeting will preceded by a short course on System Identification on March 26 by Dr. Gene Morelli, NASA, langley.

Avionics Systems Panel (ASP)
The Avionics Systems Panel (ASP) held their kickoff meeting after election of the Chair and Vice-Chair. Current Panel members include a diverse group of experts from around the Globe, representing both aviation industry and academia. The Panel revised its Charter and organization structure to include nine committees to promote its objectives. These committees are: Avionics Research and Innovation Committee; Avionics Conference Committee; Awards Committee; Cyber Security Panel Liaison Committee; Education Committee; Journal Publication Liaison Committee; Nomination and Elections Committee; Standards Committee; and UAV Panel Liaison Committee. Leadership and initial members of these committees have been identified from the initial ASP membership. The respective committee chairs will reach out to the larger AIAA, AESS and IEEE population to solicit participation in the committees. The ASP Conference Committee is ready to actively support the ICNS conference, which will be held near Washington Dulles Airport from April 9 to 11. Aloke Roy, the ASP Chair, is a member of the ICNS Executive Committee. The other main conference supported by ASP, is the IEEE Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC). Aloke Roy is the General Conference Chair for DASC 2019, which will be held from September 8 to 12 in San Diego, CA. The abstract submission deadline for DASC in March 11. However, if any IEEE/AESS member is interested in submitting a paper at DASC, Aloke will accommodate if he is contacted before end of March. The ASP Education Committee is planning to support the DASC tutorials. Also, ASP plans to hold a face-to-face coordination meeting with the AESS Cyber Panel at DASC.

Cyber Security Panel (CSP)
The AESS Cyber Security panel promotes and supports cyber security technical activities in those aspects of cyber security relevant to complex systems for space, air, ocean, or ground environments. The vision of the panel is to serve as a hub of AESS cyber security activities, promoting and highlighting technical activities, understanding and developments in this increasingly important field. The panel focus is on cyber security in AESS environments and systems, such as in aviation and aerospace. Topics of interest include cyber security vulnerabilities and countermeasures for transportation, traffic surveillance and navigation, including GPS, and information security for complex systems.

In 2019, two early fall meetings will be held to correspond with two AESS conferences with multiple tracks related to the interests of the panel: the 38th Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) in San Diego, California, and the 53rd International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology (ICCST) Chennai, India. The panel has begun work on a special issue on for the IEEE AESS Systems Magazine. Are you active in cyber security and interested in participating on this panel? Prospective members can contact the panel chair, Prof. Kathleen Kramer.

Gyro and Accelerometer Panel (GAP)
The Gyro and Accelerometer Panel (GAP) just completed the revision of IEEE Std 1293-2018 “IEEE Standard Specification Format Guide and Test Procedure for Linear Single-Axis, Nongyroscopic Accelerometers.” It was published February 25, 2019. A total of 62 individuals attended 30 bimonthly meetings of the Gyro and Accelerometer Panel during preparation of this revised standard. IEEE Std 1293 provides a specification format guide and a compilation of recommended test procedures for a linear, single-axis, nongyroscopic accelerometer for use in inertial navigation, guidance, and leveling systems. Informative annexes are given on the various types of such accelerometers (force or pendulous torque rebalance with analog or digital output, vibrating beam, and micromechanical) and error effects, on filtering, noise, and transient analysis techniques, and on calibration and modeling techniques (multipoint tumble analysis, vibration and shock test analyses, and geophysical effects in inertial instrument testing).

Now that the revision of IEEE Std 1293 is complete, the GAP is focusing on completing the development of IEEE Std 1780 “Standard for the Specification of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU).” This standard will provide guidelines for the preparation of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) specification document. This standard will allow each user to select which specifications are relevant to their particular application. The standard will use terminology which is commonly used by the inertial navigation community. If you are interested in participating in the development of IEEE Std 1780 or in any of the GAP activities, contact the panel Chair. ([email protected])

Navigation Systems Panel (NSP)
Summary of recent activities – March 2019
The Navigation Systems Panel (NSP) met via telcon on 8 January 2019. One of the major discussion points was the choice of track topics for the 2020 Position, Location and Navigation Symposium (PLANS 2020). The panel also discussed potential plenary session topics. The panel continues to seek out navigation engineers who should be nominated for elevation to Senior Member. Issues related to publishing in both conferences and journals were also discussed. The panel’s next meeting will be held in Spring.

Radar Systems Panel (RSP)
The Radar Systems Panel is gearing up for the 2019 IEEE Radar Conference that will be held in Boston the week of 22-26 April. As has become the norm for the flagship conference in the radar community, there will be an outstanding array of papers on cutting-edge research topics, running the gamut from novel radar components and architectures to new signal processing capabilities. With multiple tutorials available on both classical and emerging radar research areas, the conference is a great opportunity for those who are new to the field as well.

Space Systems Panel (SSP)
Co-chairing Track 2 Space Missions, Systems, and Architecture, 2019 IEEE Aerospace Conference, March 2019.
Preparing a Systems Magazine note on space systems and autonomous trains and cars.

UAV/UAS
A recent UAS workshop was a flying success. It was held at Binghamton University on March 9, 2019. The workshop included 3 distinguished lectures on UAS technology, applications and policies. Attendees participated in UAS demos and hands-on flight activities. 120 people attended, including students, faculty., industry, government, and local community members. (See photos below)
