Call for Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Nominations
DESCRIPTION:
The IEEE ITS Society has launched its Distinguished Lecturer (DL) program, we now have a critical
mass of Distinguished Lecturers to choose from, please see: https://ieee-itss.org/educational-
activities/distinguished-lecturer-program/.
However, we want to continue to build our list of approved DLs and we are still requesting DL
nominations within the society. As a reminder, the ITSS DL program is aimed at promoting the topic
areas of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Society in conjunction with its Technical Committees. The
DL program is sponsored by ITSS and is particularly useful for ITSS Chapters that do not regularly have
the opportunity to invite international speakers or to travel to conferences. Distinguished Lecturers
may be requested by organizers of IEEE ITSS conferences, workshops, or IEEE ITSS Chapters (including
student branch chapters). Other groups interested in building relationships with ITSS are also
welcome to make requests for DLs.
The IEEE ITS Society maintains an approved list of Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) managed through the
IEEE ITSS Education website. The expectation is that an IEEE ITSS DL would be a long standing ITSS
member, have a past record of ITSS activity (e.g., conferences, administration, publications), and be
able to promote ITSS activities at the lectures. ITSS DLs would be asked to provide a presentation (in-
person or online), and travel expenses will be reimbursed up to $3,000 for each lecture (based upon
IEEE ITSS Reimbursement Procedures for Travel and other Expenses).
To be nominated as an IEEE ITSS Distinguished Lecturer, please go to https://ieee-
itss.org/educational-activities/distinguished-lecturer-program/ and fill out the nomination form at
the bottom of the page (self-nominations are acceptable). The nomination material includes
providing a CV, a biosketch (suitable for posting on the web), example presentations that they would
be willing to give as an ITSS DL (video links to past presentations are welcome). Each nomination
package will be evaluated by the IEEE ITSS Education Committee. As part of the evaluation, various
criteria would be considered, including stature of nominee (with a focus on “rising stars”),
geographical region, and a balance of underrepresented groups. Once approved, an ITSS DL would
serve for a term of two (2) years, which may be renewed once. After serving two consecutive terms,
an individual should sit out at least two years before being considered as a DL again.

On September 25th, the IEEE ITS community gathered for an insightful panel and social event for the ITSC2024 conference. This event focused on enhancing the review process and fostering collaboration within the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) community, providing technical insights and valuable networking opportunities for researchers and professionals. This event was part of the EDI activities organized for ITSC2024, and was organized with the support of the IEEE ITS Committees on Young Professionals and Women & Underrepresented Groups.
Panel: The Review Process in the IEEE ITS Community
The purpose of this panel session was to introduce the young members of the IEEE ITS Society to the best practices of peer reviewing scientific papers and to provide some insights in writing impactful papers. The panel discussion was organized by Dr. Cecilia Pasquale, Chair for Diversity & Inclusion at ITSC2024, who also moderated the discussion.
The panel began with a brief introduction by the ITSC2024 Program Chair, who shared key statistics and insights from this year’s review process. Attendees learned about the total number of papers submitted, the average number of revisions, and the involvement of associate editors (AEs) who helped ensure the conference's high-quality standards. This summary gave participants a comprehensive look into the scale and thoroughness of the review process, reinforcing the importance of constructive feedback in the academic community.
The event continued with an engaging talk by Dr. Cathy Wu, who shared her expertise in effective paper writing. Cathy’s advice ranged from structuring research articles to communicating key contributions and offering practical tips to improve the chances of acceptance in high-profile conferences like ITSC.
The highlight of the panel was a discussion with a diverse group of experts: Jonas Mårtensson, Program Chair of ITSC2024, Cathy Wu, IEEE ITS BoG Member, Simona Sacone, EiC of IEEE T-ITS, and Catherine Elias, representative of IEEE ITS WIE. They shared their experiences in submitting and reviewing papers, providing valuable perspectives on what reviewers look for and how authors can refine their submissions. Their insights shed light on the often opaque review process, making it more approachable and transparent for early-career researchers. Some emerging topics were also addressed during the discussion, such as the sustainability of the review process and the use of artificial intelligence in both writing and reviewing papers.
Dr. Catherine Elias concluded the panel with a brief presentation on the Young Reviewer Program. This initiative aims to involve early-career researchers in the review process, offering them a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research while contributing to the ITS community. Dr. Elias highlighted the program's benefits, emphasising how it helps young researchers develop critical thinking skills and understand the standards required for publishing in top-tier conferences.
Social and Networking Events
